Of all the expectations going into Apple’s 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, angering Elon Musk probably wasn’t on the list.

It seems to have happened anyway.

Apple unveiled AI features at the conference, including an AI-powered Siri and new tools for summarizing and editing text. There is also a partnership with OpenAI.

That latter caught the ire of the Tesla CEO.

“If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies,” tweeted Musk on Monday afternoon. “That is an unacceptable security violation.”

A Faraday cage blocks electromagnetic fields, and radio waves, including Wi-Fi signals, are forms of electromagnetic radiation. Musk appears to believe AI-equipped smartphones are a security risk with the potential to gather and analyze data.

Subsequent tweets made it clearer that it is OpenAI’s integration with the Apple operating system and sending Apple user data to OpenAI that bothered Musk.

Apple and Tesla didn’t respond to requests for comment.

OpenAI referred Barron’s to a previously published statement about privacy. “Privacy protections are built in when accessing ChatGPT within Siri and Writing Tools…requests are not stored by OpenAI, and users’ IP addresses are obscured,” it said.
